Yozuna’s Baobab Fruit Jam Returns Home to Zambia

Since the founding of Yozuna, Malcolm has been keen to return to the Mthanjara Womens Cooperative, where the original Baobab jam recipe was developed, to show them what has been achieved on the strength of the recipe in the UK as well as to initiate steps to enable the Mthanjara women to supply Yozuna with Baobab powder for product production both in the UK and eventually southern Africa.

Earlier this month whilst on a trip to Zambia visiting family, Yozuna’s new Marketing Manager, Marisa, visited the Mthanjara’s Womens Cooperative to meet the women in charge of the cooperative and show them samples of Yozuna’s Baobab Fruit Jam. The women were so excited to see the packaging and taste how the recipe has been adapted to meet a European palate (which includes a significantly reduced amount of sugar to the original recipe). Supply of Baobab fruit is plentiful and now all that is needed is the right machinery to extract the powder and package it ready for export.

Turning up the heat at Devon County Show

Yozuna were at the Devon County Show on 21 and 22 May armed with our products and heap loads of our Baobab Fruit Powder. Our intention was to introduce Malcolm's yummy Yorkshire Pudding ala Baobab recipe using Yozuna's Baobab Fruit Powder, which he demonstrated to the crowd and it went down a treat.

With rising temperatures on day 1, we decided to cool things down on day 2 with some scrumptious Baobab smoothies using Yozuna's Baobab Fruit Powder. A popular one had an orange, lime, lemon and rhubarb twist. Needless to say, our 250 gram powder pots were hot footing it off the stall!

A Natural High!

Yozuna's Baobab Fruit Powder had a great night at the South West Drum and Bass Awards at the Eden Project. A mixologist from Shaker, a cocktail company, came up with an explosive cocktail for the night - a mixture of Yozuna's Baobab Lemondade, pomegranite and vodka. Everyone was on a natural high!

Yozuna had a stand in the rainforest biome where we were offering samples of our Baobab jams as well as a big bowl of Baobab powder. The young crowd loved the products and their buzz factor. At one point in the evening, Baobab fruit powder took on a new name - Afrikan Kokaine!

We need your vote!

Yozuna's Baobab Fruit Jam has been nominated for the Eco Veggie award under the category of Best Fair Trade product.

Yozuna is dedicated to developing fair trade with small independent businesses, farmers and co-operatives in Africa. It sources its baobab from sustainable suppliers in Malawi - where harvesting baobab can double household income for poor families. Also, the unrefined Golden Granulated sugar used in our Baobab Jam is certified by the Fair-trade Foundation.

We've got one month left until the voting closes and we need your vote - from last in place, Yozuna's Baobab jam is now SECOND in line to winning the award!

Please vote for us now at

Yozuna brand gets Marigold listing

Things are looking promising for the Yozuna brand with it's Marigold Health Foods listing in the April - May 2010 issue.

Retailers will now be able to easily add the Yozuna range to their next product order and offer their clients a taste of the new superfood in the UK.

The baobab is a superfruit high in vitamins and essential minerals that has been enjoyed by African people for thousands of years. It can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes, smoothies and yoghurt, working well not only in desserts, but also as an accompaniment to cheese and meats.

Yozuna has sourced the Baobab fruit powder from sustainable suppliers in southern Africa and prides its use of fair trade.

Universtiy nutrition students raving about properties of Baobab

Malcolm Riley, the founder of Yozuna, was asked to give a talk about Baobab fruit to the final year Bsc Nutrition students at the St. Mary’s University College in Twickenham as part of their module on Functional and Novel Foods. It was a chance for the students to be introduced to the new superfood to hit the UK and to taste the award winning jam that Yozuna produce. By the end of Malcolm's talk and taster session (where the jam was well and truly scoffed) the students were full of questions and as excited as Malcolm with the recipe possibilities and nutritional value of this ancient fruit. We love spreading the word and the buzz about baobab!
